Dialectology Section

The Dialectology Section is a unit under the Department of Scandinavian Research and has as its general purpose the study of spoken Danish − the traditional dialects as well as contemporary dialects and regional and social variants of spoken Danish. The core activities of the Section are:

  • editing and publishing Ømålsordbogen (Dictionary of Danish Insular Dialects)
  • publishing and conducting research within dialectology, sociolinguistics and spoken interaction analysis
  • answering questions on dialects and spoken Danish in general
  • teaching dialectology and sociolinguistics and various linguistic disciplines associated with the study of spoken language: lexicography, grammar, language history, conversation analysis, critical discourse analysis

A farming couple from Funen, who in the 1930s assisted in the work of the Dictionary of Danish Insular Dialects. The Section is open Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM. The books and manuscripts in the library are available for study during opening hours, but may not be removed from the library.

The Section is located at the University of Copenhagen , Amager, Building 27, 5th floor (see map of the Campus with bus lines and metro trains). Visitors should ring the doorbell in the elevator.
